Annie developed a fond love of reading during the early years of her childhood. While playing at Grandpa and Grandma Haugen's house, reading Frog and Toad Are Friends was always a priority. As time went along in lieu of Grandpa reading to her, she began to read to him. Every person can be a reader, they just have to find what they love to read about. Reading as a skill that has to be fostered at a young age, and introduced in a way that is fun, not demanding. By taking the pressure off individuals to read at a certain pace or level, they can learn to find what they love to read about. Yes, she realizes people read for knowledge. But people also read for the joy of escaping to another place where they can follow another world and, for a brief moment, be another identity. This is the joy Annie finds in reading, and has a great group of family and teachers to thank for that love. Annie eases into reading with the help of a comfortable environment and the white noise of her surroundings. Reading is generally an activity that she cannot wait to do, but she finds that certain assigned reading comes with difficulties. When choosing a book on her own, Annie generally picks the usual YA-Teen books that appeal to most young adults, but always welcomes recommendations from peers. Most importantly, a book has to give Annie the feeling of involvement in the text. She wants to feel what the protagonist feels, cry when they do and ache for love just like those in the books she reads. Annie feels that to enjoy reading, the author must truly captivate her senses. Annie reads for pleasure as often as her time and budget allows. Annie generally loves reading , often encouraging others to pick up a book and find that love too. When she's not busy with extra activities, reading is her favorite "me time" activity.
At an early age, Annie never really found herself writing much. In the third grade though, her teacher sparked an interest in writing. Through-out elementary school she realized writing was something she was good at, and could improve up with time too. Annie likes to write about whatever comes to mind, generally evolving from someplace completely unexpected and growing into a full fledged idea. Her writing is generally for a grade though, as writing for the pleasure of writing is something she's never had a true passion. She realizes though that many people, besides published or awaiting publishing authors, write to release pent up feelings and share ideas they are passionate about. Good writing stems from a good foundation with English and Annie feels that to be a good writer you should also be a well read person. She feels that exposure to many writing styles, spanning from YA, published articles in the news, and the classics, give a writer a foundation of different writing styles as well. As a writer herself, she feels that immediate feedback helps her immensely helpful, as well as validation through the writing process. The occasional nod to say "Yes, you don't sound like a moron!" helps keep her going through a long essay. Though Annie doesn't often write at home for pleasure, she feels the work she does for classroom assignments, both creative and formal, is pretty decent work. She does her best to preform to high standards set by herself, and will often reread and rewrite her works until she is pleased.
